In serving our mandate to protect the public, NSCN believes that EDIB is foundational to ensuring the nursing profession reflects, respects, and values the diversity of Nova Scotians.

Our EDIB Framework is founded on NSCN’s strategic plan and strategic priorities which reflect our commitment to regulate nurses in the best interest of all Nova Scotia’s citizens in a manner that is respectful, inclusive and fosters active contribution by all members of our communities.

As part of education through our EDIB journey, we identified six equity-deserving groups that are central to our learning and action:

  • People of African Descent
  • Indigenous Peoples
  • People of Colour
  • 2SLGTBQIA+ Communities
  • People with Disabilities
  • Newcomers and Immigrants

Our staff have intentionally deepened our understanding of the experiences and barriers faced by these equity-deserving groups. Together, we have moved through phases of conversation, education and action to strengthen our collective EDIB commitment.

Focusing on these six groups does not diminish the importance of other equity-deserving groups or the need for continued education. We also recognize the intersectionality of individuals who may identify as belonging to multiple groups.

In 2022, NSCN partnered with EDIB consultant, Crayon Strategies, to develop a three-year EDIB Roadmap. This roadmap established a structured and systematic approach to embed EDIB into every aspect of the college’s work.

The roadmap was built around six key EDIB objectives:

  • Culture
  • Learning and Education
  • Communication
  • Community Engagement
  • Workforce Diversification
  • Systems and Processes

A critical factor in the roadmap’s success was the commitment and accountability of NSCN’s Senior Leadership. This work began with an internal focus, strengthening foundational knowledge and advancing EDIB practices across the organization. This was followed by external work around stakeholder engagement and reviewing communication. The roadmap also incorporated evaluation steps to measure progress and effort.

In 2025, the roadmap was extended to June 2026 to support alignment with the amalgamation of NSCN and the Midwifery Regulatory Council of Nova Scotia. As we move towards this transition, we are focused on collaborating and identifying the next steps of our EDIB work as a new multi-profession regulator.
