Practice Consultations

One of the services we provide is free, confidential consultations to help nurses, employers, health providers, the public and others understand nursing practice in Nova Scotia.

The Consultations We Offer

We provide one-on-one and team-based consultations on many topics, including on how to:

  • Resolve professional practice issues in the workplace
  • Navigate our legislation, regulations, policies and programs
  • Better understand the scope of practice of an LPN, RN and NP
  • Meet the standards of practice and code of ethics in various situations
  • Consider the factors when determining whether a nurse is safe to provide care to clients

Sometimes we are asked to provide consultations that are outside our role as the regulator. If this occurs, we will refer you to another organization.

Contact Us for Team-Based Consultation & Education

If your team could benefit from learning more about a specific area of nursing practice, reach out to request a free in-person or virtual team session. This is a chance to provide education to your team through an interactive approach.

Who Should Request a Session?

Typically, sessions are organized by managers, educators and professional practice leads. Our sessions are usually closed to others in the workplace, often at the request of the session organizer.

Is there a Minimum Number of Participants Required Per Session?

We generally require a minimum of 10 people for an in-person session given the cost and time for our team’s travel to the session. There is no minimum number of participants required for a virtual session.

What Type of Sessions Are Available?

We offer both in-person and virtual sessions and each session is generally 2 hours. We can develop a customized session based on the needs of the team or you can choose from one of our pre-designed and popular sessions:

  • Accountability
  • Code of Ethics
  • Collaborative Practice
  • Continuing Competence  Program
  • Duty to Provide Care
  • Professional Boundaries
  • Resolving Professional Practice Issues
  • Scope of Practice
  • Standards of Practice

What Can I Expect from a Session?

Our sessions offer you and your team a safe and meaningful way to continue meeting your standards of practice and code of ethics. Each session is interactive and include a variety of useful information, including case studies, frequently-asked-questions and trending topics that will help to engage your team in their continuing competence journey.

Do I Need Specific Technology to Request a Virtual Session?

Yes. At minimum, you will need access to a computer, internet and a phone.

How Is a Session Advertised?

Since most of our sessions are offered to a specific team with specific needs and closed to others in the workplace, it is generally up to the session organizer to advertise for the session and ensure there is a minimum number of participants available.

How Should I Request a Session?

Email practice@nscn.ca and a practice consultant will contact you to discuss and determine what session best suits the needs of your team.
