Virtual care is the use of telecommunication technology to deliver nursing services virtually. The nurse and the client are not in the same physical location but are connected using technology such as videoconferencing, teleconferencing or email. Virtual care must be used in the best interest of the client and not solely for provider convenience. Improved client access is one of the benefits of virtual care; however, there are risks that must be considered when opting to use this mode of care delivery. We developed this practice guideline to support nurses to meet their standards of practice while providing safe, competent, ethical and compassionate virtual care services.
