The Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN) has released its Regulatory Impact Assessment Report, reinforcing our commitment to right-touch regulation. This approach focuses on only applying the necessary level of oversight to achieve the intended outcome. It ensures regulation is effective without being excessive.
As a ‘right-touch’ regulator, NSCN ensures that every regulatory action is proportionate to the level of risk to the public and that the NSCN Board and staff fully understand a problem before jumping to solutions.
In September 2024, we introduced Regulatory Guiding Principles that support consistent, innovative, and principled decision-making. These principles are being integrated across all facets of NSCN’s regulatory work.
NSCN worked with third-party consultants, The Regulator’s Practice, to conduct a review of our professional conduct processes in the spring of 2025. This included evaluating the processes against our new regulatory guiding principles.
“We were pleased to work with the Regulator’s Practice to do this work to enhance regulation on behalf of Nova Scotians,” says NSCN CEO & Registrar, Douglas Bungay. “The report identifies opportunities to refine our approaches to better serve the public, align resources for greater impact, and enhance collaboration across NSCN teams and with system partners.”
The Regulatory Impact Assessment Report outlines key findings and recommendations to strengthen and enhance our regulatory processes. NSCN has identified priorities and a plan to implement the recommendations that are included in the report. Please stay tuned to our website, newsletter, and social media for further developments.
