Consultation Overview

This is a new practice guideline that combines relevant information regarding scope of practice from the following former NSCN practice support tools:

  • Adding Interventions to a Nurse's Individual Scope of Practice or Role Practice Guideline
  • Advanced Nursing Practice Position Statement
  • Effective Utilization of RNs and LPNs Practice Guideline
  • Guidelines for Licensed Practical Nurses: Scope of Practice
  • Entry-Level and Beyond Entry-Level Competencies Practice Guideline

We requested feedback from members of the public, nurses, managers and employers to ensure we developed a relevant and useful practice guideline that will support nurses to provide safe, competent, compassionate and ethical nursing services.

Consultation Participation and Response

We requested feedback using an online survey and received responses from 10 stakeholders with two respondents having suggestions to review for grammatical errors and clarity.

Both respondents requested clarity on decision making and consultation with other health professionals related to the scope of practice changes.

Impact on the Project

Thank you for providing your feedback on the Nursing Scope of Practice Guideline. Below explains how we incorporated this feedback into the tool.

There was a request to clarify decision making and consultation with other health professionals related to the scope of practice changes. We added some words of clarity to better explain who should be consulted when making scope of practice changes.

There was a request to review the guideline for grammatical errors; this was completed prior to publishing on the website.

Next Steps/Conclusion

This practice support tool is now complete and can be found on our website here. There is a planned roll out of this practice support tool which includes highlighting the tool on the website, through the newsletter, social media and by email to subscribers. Additionally, an online educational module is being developed and will be rolled out when it is complete.
