Problematic Substance Use

Problematic substance use includes situations in which the use of a substance negatively impacts the ability of a nurse to practice in a safe, competent, and ethical manner. Problematic substance use can affect a nurse’s cognitive functioning and judgment, decision making and the ability to manage stressful situations. Problematic substance use may include controlled substances and alcohol as well as marijuana and other illicit substances. Our practice tools are available to help nurses, co-workers and managers understand their accountabilities when a nurse is experiencing problematic substance use in the workplace.
