Nurse Practitioner Prescribing Methadone Practice Guideline

Methadone is a controlled substance used for two clinical indications: opioid dependence treatment (ODT) and analgesia. The Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) and Narcotic Control Regulations.

(NCR) no longer includes section 56(1) class exemption requirement for methadone. As a result, NPs are authorized to prescribe this medication. We developed this practice guideline to help NPs understand their professional accountabilities with respect to prescribing methadone.
