Vaccinating Children Under 12

Q. Are LPNs authorized to administer the COVID-19 vaccine to children under the age of 12?

A. Immunizing children is within the professional scope of practice for all nurses. Nurses must possess the necessary competence (knowledge, skill, and judgment) to safely administer any vaccinations (including the COVID-19 vaccine) and manage any adverse reaction, including anaphylaxis. The competencies required to safely administer immunizations are outlined in the Canadian Immunization Guide.

LPNs should consult, collaborate, or refer clients with an increased risk of negative outcomes (e.g. client with a history of reaction to immunizations) or with a contraindication for the COVID-19 vaccine to an appropriate care provider before administering immunizations.

Q: How do I obtain the competencies to administer the COVID-19 vaccine to children?

A. These competencies can be achieved through education from your employer and may include completing employer-based education, learning modules supported by the employer such as the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) online education courses, (or a combination of both), and mentorship in the clinical area. Refer to your employer policy, process, or practice guideline.
