Complaint Decisions and Outcomes
The Nursing Act requires us to publish certain information about decisions made by our conduct committees. To meet this requirement, we post decisions or summaries of these cases.
In some situations, publication bans apply. If information is subject to a publication ban, it will either be redacted before posting or not published.
What Information Is Published?
- Decisions issued by the Professional Conduct Committee after a public hearing:
- A full decision is posted when a nurse is found to have engaged in professional misconduct, conduct unbecoming, incompetence, or incapacity.
- If no misconduct, incompetence, or incapacity is found, the Committee decides how much of the decision is published.
- Summaries of licensing sanctions issued without a hearing, including:
- Sanctions imposed by the Complaints Committee with the nurse's consent
- Sanctions issued through settlement agreements approved by the Professional Conduct Committee
- Summaries of current interim actions imposed by the Complaints Committee
- Previous interim actions that are no longer in effect are not published.
How to Search for a Discipline Decision
To find discipline decisions, visit the Search for a Nurse page:
- Click the 'Has Complaint Comment' box above the search button, then click 'Search' to see all nurses with public discipline records.
- If you are looking for a specific case, enter the nurse's name or registration number.
- Click 'More Details' next to the nurse's record to view the full decision or summary.
View decisions with redacted or limited information due to a publication ban.
Legacy Discipline Decisions
When the Nursing Act was proclaimed, the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Nova Scotia and the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia merged to form the Nova Scotia College of Nursing.
Discipline notices from the former colleges remain available. Many complaint publications on our site refer to decisions made before NSCN was established.
